Dilworth’s best-ever NZ Scholarship Results

Results released today reveal that Dilworth students received 23 NZ scholarships in last year’s NZQA Scholarship examinations, three of them ‘outstanding’ - the highest result ever for the school since the qualification was started by NZQA in 1991.

Headmaster Dan Reddiex was absolutely delighted and commended both students for their exceptional personal effort - and Dilworth’s teaching staff for their dedication and commitment, saying:

“This outstanding achievement reflects success across every facet of the school – every student is striving to be the best version of themselves - to really stretch to reach their full potential, and it couldn’t be more exciting to see”.

Dan Reddiex said that what impressed him the most was the depth revealed by these results across many faculties and students. “Scholarship is in reach for Dilworth students; they are starting to believe in their own abilities, and I couldn’t be prouder of them”.

NZ Scholarship – how it works
The New Zealand Scholarship is an award that recognises outstanding secondary school students. Students undertaking Level 3 NCEA can sit NZ Scholarship assessments to earn a scholarship. In context, this system is highly competitive: only 3% of students studying a subject at NCEA Level 3 pass the scholarship assessment.

To be awarded the NZ Scholarship, students are expected to demonstrate a deep understanding of the subject, high-level critical thinking, and the ability to apply their knowledge to complex situations.

Outstanding Scholarships
Receiving an Outstanding Scholarship is even more challenging and a testament to exceptional commitment, talent, and sheer effort. Three Dilworth students were awarded outstanding scholarships:
•    Brian Zhao, Geography
•    Mark Tima, English
•    Sean Lile, Printmaking – Sean was also one mark from being the country’s top scholar in printmaking.

Huge congratulations to all Dilworth Scholarship recipients of 2025 and to our dedicated teaching staff.

It is going to be an inspiring Top Scholars’ evening later this term, and we can’t wait to see our ‘new’ Old Boys, Class of 2025, back to celebrate.
