Record Number of School Leaver Scholarships for Dilworth Students

Date: 23 Feb 2026

For many of our most recent Dilworth graduates, the transition from school to university has begun on a wonderful high. We are delighted that a record number of School Leaver Scholarships – 32 in total – were awarded to the class of 2025.

It is easy to confuse these scholarships with NZ Scholarships (NZQA), but they are different. These scholarships are external and awarded by various universities and organisations. While most provide financial support, many, such as the Staples Education Foundation Scholarship, also offer additional assistance to aid students throughout their tertiary studies. Some include substantial financial components that can help cover tuition fees and/or accommodation costs – significantly reducing student loan debt!

A range of organisations have awarded scholarships to Dilworth leavers starting at the beginning of the university this year.

Gemma Halford - Head of Learning Area – Careers and Pathways

Head of Careers and Pathways at Dilworth, Gemma Halford, was delighted with the exceptional success rate for Dilworth students. She puts it down to “The high calibre of student applications”, but she also noted that our young men often have wide-ranging talents and skill sets beyond academic study and a strong ethic for service.

“While you might think university scholarships are the domain of more academically gifted students, it isn’t always the case – selection criteria vary widely ”, notes Gemma.

Ronnie Turner - AUT’s Student Recruitment Advisor

This was confirmed by AUT’s Student Recruitment Advisor, Ronnie Turner, who explained that while some AUT scholarships are awarded solely based on academic results, others also consider well-rounded qualities in applicants. When asked what makes a strong application for his organisation, he remarked that AUT also considers applications where students clearly align with and reflect AUT’s values: Tika (Integrity), Pono (Respect), and Aroha (Compassion). Based on his own analysis, he believes Dilworth students performed well in this area:

“Dilworth students align well with AUT’s values – helping in the community, service and demonstrating leadership”.

Ronnie said students from across the country hotly contest AUT’s scholarships. Those lucky enough to receive an AUT scholarship can put it towards going into the Halls of Residence. or, if they live in Auckland, towards their study costs.

Ronnie’s advice to students is always to ensure you put effort into obtaining excellent references – they really matter!

While Staples Education Foundation’s General Manager, Karen Bennett, also commented on the strong all-around qualities of Dilworth students, she said SEF is also focused on proven academic commitment.

“From an SEF perspective, we look for students who demonstrate academic commitment throughout their Dilworth schooling, and a genuine desire to make the most of the opportunities available to them. Outstanding applications are those from students who can clearly articulate their goals, reflect on their journeys with integrity and honesty”.

Another essential element to SEF, Karen noted, is the applicant’s intent to give back in the future. She said, “ Interviewees who show the panel how the SEF scholarship and all that it offers will help support them not only to achieve their own aspirations but contribute positively to their communities in the future”.

Huge congratulations to every Dilworth student who received a scholarship. We wish you all the best at university in 2026.

External scholarships can be life-changing as you start your tertiary studies.

For current students, Dilworth’s Careers Team is here to support you. As the year progresses, ensure you are aware of what’s available and ask for help.
