Athletic success for Isaac Vaeau-Mulitalo
Year 12 student Isaac Vaeau-Mulitalo took home a silver medal in the Under 18 Men’s Hammer Throw at the NZ Track & Field Championships in Hamilton on Saturday 10 March.
This is only the second year that Isaac has been throwing the hammer, after he transferred from the more common shot put and discus events.
Isaac started competing in athletics when he was seven years old in shot put and discus. As he developed his techniques and progressed to secondary school, he was able to secure Dilworth records for both of these events. Isaac also went on to win the North Island Secondary Schools (NISS) Athletics Championships discus in Year 9 and place in various other competitions at school level.
In 2017 Isaac made the decision to switch from discus and shot put to the hammer throw as he wanted a new challenge and found hammer interesting. Isaac secured Didier Pooppe at the end of 2016 to coach him in this new discipline. He showed a willingness to learn new techniques and trained extremely hard to grasp the new concepts he was faced with. Under Pooppe’s guidance and direction Isaac went from 6th at Nationals at the end of 2017 to 2nd at this event.
This year Isaac will be competing at both the Auckland and North Island Secondary Schools Championships with the desire to medal in both of these events. The future is looking bright for Isaac but he knows he cannot look too far ahead and the importance of training hard and trying to make small improvements each time he competes.
